Adult Dental Care
For many families, the dental services Eisner Pediatric & Family Medical Center offers are the only way they can receive preventive dental care. We don’t want you to wait until you’re in pain to come in for dental care. It’s important to come in for regular cleanings every six months to catch problems early.
Poor dental health can worsen other conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, clogged arteries, and other chronic illnesses.
How Medi-Cal Changes May Affect You
Recent changes to Medi-Cal and other funding have limited the services that adults can receive as part of no-cost or low-cost dental treatment. Most non-emergency treatments are no longer covered. We recognize that this makes regular checkups more difficult for many of our adult patients. We can still perform dental work that your doctor believes is necessary to improve a medical condition. Your doctor at EPFMC can refer you to our Dental Clinic.
For non-medically necessary cases, coverage for most services, including cleanings, examinations, fillings, gum treatments, crowns, root canals, and dentures, was eliminated. Under the new guidelines, the following services are covered for adults under Medi-Cal and PPP funding:
- Pregnant women can receive pregnancy-related services or be treated for a condition that may cause a problem with the pregnancy. This includes examinations, cleanings, and gum treatments.
- Dental services for the relief of pain and infections, such as tooth removal, are allowed.
- Dental services to protect the health of patients with diabetes is permitted.
- Dental work that is medically necessary before a medical procedure can be performed.
Wisdom Tooth Extractions
For most patients, we refer normal tooth extractions to a Los Angeles County provider. But for some extractions of wisdom teeth, we have an oral surgeon available the first Saturday of each month to perform this surgery. You must be an EPFMC patient.
It’s important to keep your appointments. If you find you must cancel your appointment, please call us at least 24 hours before you’re scheduled. Some of our specialists are only available once each month. Please free the time slot for another patient if you can’t keep your appointment.
